Is A Weak Butt Ruining Your Running?

It is almost a guaranty over the years of training for duathlons or triathlons that you will encounter an overuse injury of some kind. In most cases these injuries come from running as it applies the most amount of force on the body. The gluteus medius (a stabilizing muscle in the hip) should be considered in every running injury. In my experiences as a coach when I have an athlete with a running overuse injury of the lower limb I find they have poor gluteus medius function. There is a growing theory that the strength and function of this muscle is probably the most important active component in the achievement of a biomechanically efficient running technique.

So as you go into your build phase of training spend some time strengthening your gluts and especially glut medius. If you are looking at improving your run this season, more mileage might not be the most effective method of improving your speed. Get someone who has the expertise in assessing the biomechanics of your running. Spend the time to learn how to strengthen your gluts properly, as most glut medius exercises are very challenging to do RIGHT. As I always say, you are only as strong as your weakest link.
